The current flag of Barbados was officially adopted
November 30, 1966, on the country’s first Independence Day. The flag features
three vertical stripes, the middle stripe is gold, symbolizing the sand of the
islands, and is surrounded by two blue stripes, symbolizing the sky and the
sea. In the center of the flag is a broken trident, representing the break from
British rule. The three points of the trident symbolize the three
characteristics of democracy, a government of, for and by the people.
