The official flag of the Basque Region, commonly referred
to as the Ikurriña, was created in 1894 for
the Biscay region of Euskadi, but wasn’t officially adopted by
Basque Country until December of 1979. This red flag features a white cross
over a green saltire. The color red represents the blood shed in the fight for
independence, and white is a symbol of God and the Catholic faith. The green
saltire represents the oak tree of Guernica, a symbol of freedom.
