The current flag of Belgium was officially adopted in 1831.
Belgium’s flag, inspired by the national flag of France,
features three equal vertical bands in black, yellow
and red. These colors were derived from the coat of arms of the
Duchy of Barbant, a historical region located in what is now
considered Belgium and the Netherlands. These colors first
appeared on the original version of the flag used during the
Belgian revolution against Austria in the 1700’s. This previous
design featured a horizontal pattern, using the same colors in a
different order, and was used only briefly until the current
flag was created and adopted.
