Although versions similar to Bermuda’s current flag have
been used since the early 1900’s, the flag recognized today wasn’t officially
adopted until 1967. Although, this date isn’t entirely agreed upon by experts,
some claim that the flag was adopted closer to 1910, when it is believed the
coat of arms was created. The flag is red, contrary to the typical blue ensign
traditionally used by a British colony. It features a Union Jack in the top
left corner and a badge centered on the right hand side. There is some
discrepancy as to when the badge was formally adopted, but it is widely believed
to represent the shipwrecked Sea Venture, that crashed off the coast
around 1609. A red lion, considered a symbol of Bermuda’s relationship with
England, holds the shield depicting the wreck. Some versions of the flag
contain a motto under the seal, but this is not currently considered part of the
official design.
