The current flag of Botswana was officially adopted in
September of 1966. This light blue flag features a single black stripe across
the middle of the flag, bordered on each side with a thin white stripe. The
colors on the flag are a reference to the country’s coat of arms. The blue
color represents water, a reference to the Botswana’s motto “Pula,” meaning
‘rain’ or ‘let there be rain.’ The white and black band is inspired by the
zebra, the national animal of Botswana, but is recognized as a symbol of racial
diversity and harmony.
