The most recent version of the flag of
Brazil was adopted in May of 1992, however the design dates back
to 1889. This green flag features a yellow rhombus shape
centered on the flag, containing a blue sphere. The sphere is a
representation of the globe and features 27 assorted stars that
represent several constellations, as well as the twenty-six
states of the federation and one for the Federal District.
Together the stars represent the sky above Rio de Janeiro at
8:30 a.m. on November 15, 1889, the day of the proclamation of
the republic. The original design featured 21 stars when it was
initially adopted, but the number was increased in 1960, 1968,
and most recently in 1992. There is also a white band curved
around the globe that reads,
Ordem e Progresso,” the
national motto of Brazil, meaning “Order and Progress.”
