The official flag of the British Virgin
Islands was adopted on November 15, 1960. This flag consists of
a blue ensign with the Union Jack in the top left canton, and
the Coat of Arms of the British Virgin Islands towards the fly
edge. The coat of arms feature a woman holding a lamp,
surrounded by eleven more golden lamps. The woman represents
Saint Ursula, who is said to have traveled across Europe with
11,000 virgin handmaids, the lamps on the seal each represent
1,000 of them. Legend has it, Christopher Columbus thought of
this story upon first seeing the islands, and that is how they
were named.
