The current flag of Bulgaria, officially
adopted in 1878, was used until Bulgaria fell under
communist rule in 1947, and was re-introduced in 1990. The
flag was designed to emulate the flag of Russia, because of
their support in Bulgaria’s quest for independence from
Turkey. This tri-color flag features three equal horizontal
stripes, in white, green and red. Green, the color that
differentiates this flag from Russia’s, stands for freedom.
White represents peace and red is a symbol of the bravery of
the Bulgarian people.
