The current flag
of Burundi was originally adopted in December of 1968, but the proportions were
re-established in September of 1982. This red and green flag features a white
saltier with a white disc in the center. The disc contains three red
six-pointed stars with a green border. These stars represent the national
motto, ‘Unité, Travail, Progrès,’ French for, ‘Unity, Work and
Progress.’ The three stars also represent the three ethnic groups native to
Burundi, the Hutu, Tutsi and the Twa. The three colors embrace traditional
meanings, green is a symbol of hope, white stands for peace, and red represents
the sacrifice and struggle for independence
