The current flag of the Central African Republic was
officially introduced in December of 1958. The flag consists of four horizontal
stripes, blue, white, green and yellow, with a single red vertical stripe in the
middle, as well as a yellow five pointed star in top left corner of the blue
band. Together the colors represent France, combined with the Pan-African
colors as a symbol of the ‘respect and friendship’ the countries share for each
other. Specifically, the red stripe stands for the blood shed to maintain and
protect the Central African Republic, creating a common bond between the
nations. Each color also embraces an individual meaning. Blue stands for
freedom, and the vast sky as well as serenity. White is purity and bravery,
green represents hope and faith, and yellow is a symbol of tolerance and
charity. The yellow star is a symbol of independence.
