The current flag of Chad was officially adopted in November
of 1959. The inspiration for this flag was derived from a combination of the
French tricolor and the pan-African colors. The tri-band design consists of
blue, yellow and red vertical bands. Blue represents the sky and rivers, as
well as forests and agriculture. Yellow symbolizes the sun and desert, and red
represents sacrifice and the blood of martyrs. There is controversy surrounding
the design of this flag, because it is nearly identical to the national flag of
Romania. However, both countries still recognize the same design as their
respective national flags.
