The current flag of China was officially adopted October 1,
1949. This red flag features five yellow five-pointed stars in the canton. One
star is central and larger, with the other four arranged in an arc facing it.
There are multiple interpretations as to the meaning of the stars.
Historically, one explanation considers the larger star a symbol of the
Communist party, and the four smaller stars a representation of the four
different classes of society; the workers, peasants, bourgeoisie and the
capitalists. Another interpretation, perhaps more widely embraced in recent
years, is that the large star still represents the Communist party, but the four
smaller stars stand for the other ‘dominant’ political parties within the
country.
