The current
official flag of Colombia was adopted in 1861. This tricolor flag features
three horizontal bands, a wider yellow band and equal blue and red bands on the
bottom half. The color yellow is considered a symbol of sovereignty and
justice, blue represents nobility and vigilance, and red stands for ‘valour,
honor, generosity and victory achieved at the cost of bloodshed.’ Another
interpretation considers yellow the color of universal liberty, blue a symbol of
social equality and red the symbol of fraternity. The civil design contains a
seal in the center of the flag, however the National flag and state ensign do
not contain this emblem |
