The current flag of Cuba was officially adopted in 1902,
after the country gained independence. The flag features five equal horizontal
stripes, alternating blue and white, and a red triangle originating from the
hoist side of the flag. Within the triangle is ‘La Estrella Solitaria’ a single
white five pointed star, after which the flag itself was named. The flag was
first hoisted by General Francisco Lopez in 1850, during an unsuccessful attempt
to free Cuba from colonial rule. The three blue stripes are said to stand for
the original three divisions of the territory while under Spanish rule. The two
white stripes symbolize strength, independence and purity. The red triangle
stands for ‘liberty, equality and fraternity,’ as well as the blood shed for
independence. The single white star is a symbol of independence and absolute
freedom.
