The current flag of Italy
was officially adopted in June of 1946, however the tricolor was
in use as early as 1798 by Napoleon’s Cisalpine Republic. The
design, inspired by the French Tricolor, features three equal
vertical bands in a green-white-red pattern. These colors were
most likely derived from the uniforms of Milan’s civil militia
during the late 1700’s. The flag temporarily fell out of use in
1802, until it was re-introduced by the Kingdom of Sardinia in
1848, charged with arms of Savoy. This flag was recognized from
1861 until the arms were removed in 1946, resulting in the
current flag of Italy. |
