The emblem is normally used in blue or black on a white or light-coloured background. If the emblem is to be used in a colour lighter than its background, its design should conform to that of the NATO flag. The exact origins of the NATO emblem are unclear, although it is known that the basic design was conceived by a member of the International Staff.
