The History of the “Join or Die” flag: Benjamin Franklin published a political cartoon of a severed snake and the motto of “Join or Die” in 1754 when urging the colonists to unite. This image was published in the May 9, 1754 issue of Franklin’s paper, The Pennsylvania Gazette. This was never an actual flag but popular demand for a flag prompted the production of this flag design.
